When sourcing whiteboards in bulk, the surface coating is the most critical factor determining the product’s lifespan. While low-quality and premium boards may look identical from a distance, their performance differs drastically. Here is how to easily identify a superior coating.
1. The Erase Test (Ghosting Check)
The most obvious sign of a cheap coating is “ghosting.” Write on the board with a dry-erase marker, leave it for a few minutes, and try to wipe it off. A premium, multi-layered coating will erase flawlessly without leaving any faint traces. Low-quality boards, which often use single-layer paint, will leave stubborn marks that require harsh chemical cleaners to remove.
2. The Water Drop Test (Porosity)
Coating density dictates stain resistance. Place a few drops of water on the surface. On a high-quality board, the water will bead up and roll off smoothly, indicating a tightly sealed, non-porous surface. On a cheap board, the water will spread out flat or even seep into the surface, meaning it will easily absorb permanent marker stains over time.
3. Visual Inspection for Glare
Premium boards use advanced matte or semi-matte finishes designed to diffuse light evenly. Low-quality boards often have an overly glossy, plastic-like shine that creates severe glare under office lighting, causing eye strain.
4. Scratch Resistance
Gently press a fingernail or a coin against an inconspicuous area. A high-grade resin coating will be hard and resilient. Cheap coatings are soft and will scratch easily, permanently ruining the writing surface.
